Fellowships to USA IHE faculty from the mathematics, engineering, or science departments for summer programs that offer hands-on experience in military aviation research. Applications are especially encouraged from the faculty of minority colleges, universities, and institutions. Summer programs will be from 8 to 12 weeks long.

The objectives of the U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program are as follows:

  1. To stimulate professional relationships among U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program participants and the scientists and engineers at Air Force research facilities
  2. To enhance the research interests and capabilities of faculty (both new and experienced researchers) in the U.S. academic community
  3. To elevate the awareness in the U.S. academic community of Air Force research needs and foster continued research at U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program fellows' institutions
  4. To provide the U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program participant opportunities to perform high-quality and meaningful research at Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Directorates, Air Force Test Center, the United States Air Force Academy, or the Air Force Institute of Technology
  5. To provide nationally accredited mentoring of academic researchers at technical directorates of the AFRL, Air Force Test Center, the United States Air Force Academy, and the Air Force Institute of Technology.

U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program faculty participants have the opportunity to bring a graduate student with them.

Estimated Size of Grant:

U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program participants receive a weekly stipend which is based on the status of the participant's application.

The levels for the FY 2021 U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program faculty are as follows:
- Assistant Professor: $1,545/weekly
- Associate Professor: $1,751/weekly
- Professor: $1,957/weekly

The levels for the FY 2021 U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program graduate students are as follows:
- Currently pursuing a master's degree*: $910.52/weekly
- Currently pursuing a Ph.D.*: $1,210.25/weekly

*The graduate student stipend is based on the degree the student is pursuing at the time he/she is nominated by the faculty member.

Term of Contract:

The minimum tenure for the U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program is 8 weeks; the maximum tenure is 12 weeks. The term of appointment can be 8 to 12 continuous weeks between May and August 2021. Participants who have satisfactorily completed their requirements from the previous years may reapply.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Faculty

1. Applicants to the U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program must be citizens of the United States. Dual U.S. Citizens may apply with an exception to those applying to Directed Energy (RD) and Space Vehicles (RV) Directorate programs. Those applying to RD and RV must be U.S. Citizens only.

2. Applicants must currently hold a full-time appointment at a U.S. accredited baccalaureate-granting college, university, or technical institution.

3. Applicants must have a Ph.D in science, mathematics, or Air Force-relevant engineering disciplines.

4. Applicants' research interests must be in line with the interests and needs of the various Air Force Research Facilities. These include the nine Air Force Research Laboratory Directorates, Air Force Test Center, the United States Air Force Academy, and the Air Force Institute of Technology. 5. Selected fellows are expected to conduct research at an Air Force Research Laboratory Directorate, Air Force Test Center, the U.S. Air Force Academy, or the Air Force Institute of Technology, not at their home institution or any other site.

6. All appointments are subject to the participant's successful security investigation and approved access to unclassified government information systems.

Faculty members from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Minority Institutions, American Indian Tribal Colleges and Universities, and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HBCU/MI/TCU/HSI), as designated by the U.S. Department of Education, are especially encouraged to apply!

Graduate students must meet the following requirements:

1. They must be citizens of the United States.
2. They must be currently pursuing a graduate degree (master’s or Ph.D.).
3. They must be enrolled in graduate school for the semester following the fellowship program.
4. They must hold to the same guidelines outlined for their faculty counterparts. (See numbers 4-6 above.)

To be eligible for an award, each application must be approved by the designated research advisor for that research opportunity and must be endorsed by the appropriate Air Force research facility.

Funding Limitations:
- Systems Plus does not cover the cost of a rental car during participants’ tenure at the lab.
- Systems Plus does not cover the expense of travel insurance.
- Systems Plus reimburses the costs for participants only, not for families traveling with the participant.
- Participants may not receive funding from other federal sources (including research grants and contracts) during their fellowship appointment.
- AFRL SFFP program funds cannot be used to cover any medical costs.

Pre-Application Information:

All applications must be electronically submitted by November 30, 2020 at 11:59 PM EST.

You will need to provide complete contact information for three (3) references for each program to which you apply. The first must be your Dean or Department Head. The deadline for reference forms and letters is November 30, 2020 at 11:59 PM EST.

Award notifications will be made in Spring 2021.

It is recommended that applicants first find an advisor to work with so that they can share their research proposal with him/her before applying to the program.
