Grants of up to $20,00 per year to USA universities for student research projects that take place in Latin America. Applicants must complete an online registration process prior to submitting an application. Eligible universities must have a Latin American Studies center, or equivalent.

Tinker is launching the Collaborative to connect Centers committed to working together to enhance the impact of the student field research experience. Successful applicants to the Collaborative will receive field research grant funding for their Centers for a five-year period and have access to network-building and knowledge exchange.

When created, the stated program objectives were:

  1. Promote the study of Latin America by U.S. graduate students by directly supporting research
  2. Foster contact and relationship-building between U.S. and Latin American individuals and institutions

The program offers students an opportunity to acquire a deeper knowledge of language and culture; to familiarize themselves with information sources relevant to their studies; to conduct pilot studies and preliminary investigations that will inform their dissertation proposals or theses; and to develop contacts with scholars and institutions in their fields of study.

With the Collaborative, Tinker aims to:

  1. Establish a learning community of Centers committed to enhancing the impact of the student field research experience on their campuses. Illustrative areas for joint experimentation, tool-building, and knowledge exchange include:
    1. Pre-departure support
    2. Resources to encourage responsible practices in field research
    3. Approaches for sharing research externally and with field informants
    4. Networking of current and former FRG recipients to encourage collaboration and information sharing before and after field visits
    5. Improved approaches for monitoring, evaluation, and program improvement
  2. Provide stable, long-term support for field research for the Collaborative members and increase predictability of funding for Centers as well as current and prospective students.

Number of Grants:

10-12 universities will receive grants, pending final decisions by Tinker.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Between $10,000 and $20,000 per year. Each final award amount will be determined during the application and selection process in consultation with applicants.

Term of Contract:

Five years, if annual reporting and expenditure requirements are met each year.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Participation in the Collaborative is open to universities that meet the following criteria:
- An accredited U.S. university with a Center for Latin American Studies, or other Center, that can serve as the administrative home for the program, including management of the campus-based application process; disbursement and tracking of funds; reporting; and participation in Collaborative activities.
- Fulfill the five-year 1:1 matching requirement; all university funds must be distributed to students. Centers do not need to have matching funds secured in order to apply but do need to have commitment secured by February 28, 2020. Please reach out to Tinker staff with any questions about matching funds.
- A successful track record as a Tinker FRG recipient or demonstrated success with grant administration for a non-Tinker program.
- Centers may apply to the Collaborative regardless of their current funding status with Tinker, i.e., Centers currently receiving FRG funding may apply to the Collaborative and may request a different funding amount.
- FRG funding is available to graduate students from all academic disciplines. Pre-dissertation doctoral students and those seeking master’s or professional degrees are eligible. The Tinker Field Research Grants are not to be used for advanced dissertation research; they are intended to provide graduate students with early experience conducting field research in Latin America and the opportunity to develop independent research projects. Citizens of Latin American countries enrolled at United States institutions are eligible to receive awards to conduct research in their home countries provided they have not had previous field research experience in that country.
- Up to 10% of the funds awarded by the Tinker Foundation may be used to cover direct costs of implementing the program on campus, e.g., communications materials, catering costs for student gatherings, travel to any Collaborative meetings. (Centers also may opt to use 100% Tinker funds for student travel.)

Pre-proposal Conference:

The Foundation will host conference calls on November 26th at 12pm ET and December 5th at 3pm ET. These calls will be strictly for reviewing the application timeline and answering any questions that you may have about the overall application process or program. The Foundation will not be providing any new information during these calls and your participation is entirely optional. Technical and trouble-shooting questions should be addressed directly to Tinker staff. To join via computer, use To join via phone, call +1.646.558.8656 and use passcode 6374954971#. The call will be audio only. In addition, you may email questions at any time and Tinker staff will respond as quickly as possible.

Pre-Application Information:

- Conference call: November 26th.
- Conference call: December 5th.
- Submit the registration form in Fluxx between December 2nd and January 13th. Registration is the first step of the application process and will give you access to the full online application. After the registration form is submitted, you will receive your login credentials for the online application within three business days.
- Submit the full application by January 22nd at 11:59pm ET.
- The Foundation recognizes that it may take additional time to secure the matching funds from the university and asks you to submit the application with or without this commitment. You have until February 28th to secure the commitment.
- In February 2020, Tinker staff will conduct interviews with a subset of applicants, as needed. Interviews will be scheduled with as much advance notice as possible.
- Final decisions will be made by late March, followed by a potential in-person gathering of participating Centers at the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) Congress in May.

Collaborative members must provide at least a 1:1 match with funds from the university or other non-Tinker sources. Overhead, faculty time, or other in-kind funds are not eligible to meet the matching fund requirement. All funds, except for up to 10% of funds from Tinker, must be allocated to student recipients for field research.
