Grants of up to $2,000 to Oregon organizations, educators, and volunteer projects for activities that improve and rehabilitate trout and salmon fish populations and their habitats. Applicants must contact program staff before applying. Funding is intended to support projects in the areas of education, habitat restoration, fish culture, and monitoring and evaluation.

The proposed project shall further the goals of STEP, which are to:

  • Provide the greatest possible opportunity for citizen participation in achieving the Department’s management objectives;
  • Rehabilitate and enhance natural habitat for salmon and trout;
  • Rehabilitate and enhance populations of salmon and trout; and
  • Support and promote an education program to increase the public’s understanding of Oregon’s aquatic resources and the environment.

Preference will be given to proposals with strong matching funds and that encourage the development of partnerships and the use of volunteers.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grants are available to support the STEP related activities of organizations, volunteer projects, and educators.

Except in certain circumstances, the following expenses are not usually funded:
- Ongoing expenses
- Travel costs (e.g. mileage, fuel, vehicle rental)
- Staff time or administrative costs

However, these expenses are welcomed as project match.

Mini-Grant Deadlines:
- January 29, 2021 (Meeting Date: February 25-26, 2021)

The application must be received at ODFW Headquarters by 5:00 p.m. on the day of the deadline in order to be included in a given review cycle. If an electronic copy or fax is submitted by the deadline; a signed paper copy must be postmarked no later than the next business day after the deadline.

How to Apply for a Mini-Grant:
- Step 1: Contact the local STEP biologist and STAC member to discuss and refine the proposal.
- Step 2: Fill out the two-page application.
- Step 3: Get local STEP biologist and STAC member signatures prior to submittal.
- Step 4: Submit the application by the application deadline.
- Step 5: Application reviewed by STAC at its next meeting.
- Step 6: Applicants will be notified in writing of STAC decision. Applicants will be sent a letter 1-2 weeks following the STAC meeting.
- Step 7: Expend funds and request reimbursement.
- Step 8: Project Completion Reporting

Mini-Grant funds will be provided on a reimbursement basis only. Invoices, credit card receipts, and other proof-of-purchase documents are adequate for reimbursement.
