Grants to USA researchers, MS and PhD graduate students, and residency interns for horse-related research. Funding is intended for research studies that benefit horses, owners, and the horse industry. Grant categories include young investigator, general research, and equine head trauma.

The Foundation encourages the submission of research projects related to the health, welfare, and utility of the horse that will create meaningful impact for the horse, horse owners, and the equine industry. Research priorities for the 2020-21 granting cycle are defined as follows:

  1. Infectious Diseases - with priority placed on research that addresses:
    1. Rhodococcus equi
    2. Streptococcus equi (including subspecies equi and or zooepidemicus)
    3. Equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1)
  2. Equine Wellness - with priority placed on research that addresses:
    1. Parasite resistance
  3. Equine Welfare - with priority placed on research that addresses:
    1. Competition integrity
  4. All other proposals

Grant Categories:

  • General Research
  • AQHF Young Investigator Award: Proposals must be for a stand alone or pilot project with exceptionally focused scope and objectives in the field of equine research. Project proposals should incorporate the American Quarter Horse Foundation equine research program priority statement. Budgetary items for research assistance may include graduate student tuition, lease and care of horses, consumable supplies, service contracts, and publication costs. Research performed must be monitored by a graduate level advisor, major professor or senior faculty PhD or DVM/VMD mentor.
  • AQHF Refrigerator Fund for Equine Head Trauma: The American Quarter Horse Foundation (AQHF) invites the application of research proposals with specific emphasis on equine head trauma. Special consideration will be given to projects with collaborative approaches between departments and or institutions. Targeted research directed at any of the following common avenues will be given equal consideration: Prevention, Treatment, Diagnostics, Hospitalization, Prognosis (Retrospective Analysis). Estimated Size of Grant:

The average grant awarded will vary between program request area:
- General Research ($25,000-$75,000)
- Head Trauma (up to $50,000)
- Young Investigator Awards (up to $20,000).

Term of Contract:

Researchers may request funding for a one-year grant period. Proposals for projects of more than one year’s duration must be re-submitted each year thereafter for recurrent consideration. If a project was awarded funding in the previous year, it will be evaluated on individual merit and is not guaranteed future funding. Approved projects will be funded on the Foundation’s fiscal year cycle of October 1 - September 30.

Researchers may apply.

AQHF Young Investigator Award - Eligible Applicants:
- MS or PhD level graduate students
- DVM/VMD level residency interns
- Postdoctoral researchers in training
Graduate or residency students wishing to apply must be currently enrolled in a graduate sciences program.

Based on the research program’s established criteria, the following items have been identified by the AQHF Equine Research Committee as undesirable proposal design objects and/or requests: requests from private companies; research designated for tradename products; commercial product research; and use of ponies as a model in the research plan. Proposals containing these items will not be considered for grant funding.

AQHF will not fund salary of principal investigator(s), indirect costs, the purchase of capital equipment or travel to scientific conferences. AQHF does not pay overhead no matter how it may be defined.

Pre-Application Information:

The deadline to apply is November 1, 2020.

Notification will be mailed to the institution’s Office of Sponsored Programs beginning in April.

Funding will be awarded in quarterly installments, with 25% of the total grant contingent on the completion of the designated research.
